Alacati Pazaryeri Mosque

"The building was began to be built in 1830s by Yuhannis Halapes and put in service as a church in 1874. It is known that the church was converted into a mosque immediately after the proclamation of the Republic. The building with three naves and basilica plan, was built by the technique of stone masonry. This building which is one of the three biggest churches built for Greeks, is the only church that have survived to the present day. This place of worship that has been named as 'Pazaryeri Mosque' after being changed into mosque from church, could be preserved as a rich cultural heritage after the determination of icons, religious depictions, altars and statues during the restoration work.
The restoration work that had been initiated in 2009 with the support of grant provided by the Izmir Special Provincial Directorate of Administration as a result of the request of Alacati Municipality, was completed in July of 2010. The attached shops at the facade narthex ('son cemaat' in Turkish language) were removed within the framework of restoration work and overall cleaning and strengthening works were made at facades. All excess loads on roofs have been removed and the building was cleaned of concrete applications. All unique and original plaster and motifs were preserved and only cleaning, strengthening and partial retouching were performed. Especially the existing marble iconostasis (a wall of holy paintings in churches separating Bema part from the Altar) was cleaned and the paintings under the paint has been revealed. The unique iconostasis enriched with these paintings due to the fact that the building had been used as a mosque for a long time of period, was separated from the place of worship of the mosque with a modern curtain. All these works were conducted under supervision of specialists and carried out by an expert team. The building serves as a mosque for worship as well as a touristic place when requested, currently."
