Alacati Windmills

"The windmills that had been estimated to be built between the years of 1850 and 1920, were built on hills exposed to the wind. These stone masonry structures with a cylindrical body and a circular form, were designed as two or three floors. The mechanism was placed in the top floor and the middle and the ground floors were used for storage and reception. It has been known that the regional stone used for the construction of these windmills can be easily shaped due to its softness and provide sound and heat insulation thanks to its durable and porous structure which hardens over the years. Roofs are in conic style. The entrance is provided through a single door and access to upper floors is only possible with the stairs made of stone.
The restoration work that had been initiated in 2011 with the support of grant provided by the Izmir Special Provincial Directorate of Administration as a result of the request of Alacati Municipality, was completed in May of 2013. Cleaning, strengthening and repair works of both 4 windmills were conducted within the framework of the restoration work. Especially, the first windmill on the entrance of first parcel was restored together with its entire and all kind of internal mechanism in accordance with the original portioning principles. The upper pulley of the windmill mobilizes the machinery mechanism in the mill by rotating by the wind power. Thus, wheat can be ground on millstones as a result of the movement of the other parts. The other 3 windmills were designed as social activity spaces. Expert teams provided support for the windmills during restoration work. Structures and parcel serve as a social activity center."
